Is Cold Water Good For Skin

  • After speaking with a cosmetic dermatologist, I tried doing ice-h2o facials every mean solar day for a week.
  • I noticed my skin was a lilliputian irritated right abroad, only after a few days, I saw some improvement.
  • I likely won't keep this in my daily routine, but I might do it over again for special occasions.

Ever since I was a teenager — and acne became the clingy best friend I never asked for — I've found myself super self-conscious virtually my skin.

I've tried almost every treatment marketed to me by dermatologists and cosmetologists: Glycolic-acrid peels that brand your skin feel similar it's on burn? Aye, I've done many of those. Facials where they spend 75% of the fourth dimension extracting the insides of pus-filled pimples? I did those at least once a calendar month.

Just when I didn't have easy admission to in-person treatments, I decided to try out a DIY remedy that I saw on TikTok called the ice-water facial.

It'south exactly as cringeworthy every bit it sounds. You lot fill up a big bowl upward with common cold water and ice cubes — some people will infuse the water with cucumbers or other ingredients — and spend time dunking your confront in equally many times equally y'all can.

Despite my trepidation, I decided to give this a try every day for a week. Read on to see how it went.

Before starting, I spoke to a cosmetic dermatologist almost the potential risks and benefits of ice-water facials

It was shockingly common cold the first couple of nights.

Before kick off my experiment, I spoke to corrective dermatologist Michele Green, who said the concept of an ice-h2o facial isn't new.

"The concept of cold therapy or applying water ice to the skin is not a new one, in fact, water ice therapy has been around for centuries," Green told Insider. "In that location are many benefits to applying ice water to the skin such as decreasing inflammation and reducing puffiness, also improving the advent of the skin tone, minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores and improving superficial wrinkles."

Light-green as well shared that water ice-water facials tin remove toxins and reduce inflammation through constriction, which tin can heave circulation and bring forth a radiant complexion.

But she warned that overdoing it with ice-water facials can lead to irritation.

"You should avoid submerging your face for too long in the ice-cold water. If the water is too cold it can besides crusade pare irritation," she told Insider.

She also said that if you accept rosacea y'all should skip this beauty ritual as it tin can exacerbate the redness and irritation often associated with the skin condition.

I don't have rosacea, merely I went into the week prepared to potentially see some slight irritation on my pare.

I made the facials part of my nightly routine

I decided to exercise the facials at nighttime.

Before I get to bed, I spend around twenty minutes on my skin. Generally, I take my makeup off, wash my face, and use a few different creams and serums.

But this week, I decided to replace my nighttime products with the ice-water facial.

I filled the bowl with ice-cold water and all of the ice cubes from my tray. Then I put a timer on my phone for 15 minutes and dunked my face in the water for nearly 10 to 15 seconds per infinitesimal.

The kickoff nighttime was hard to go through.

The offset solar day was tough. I wanted to quit later v minutes but I kept pushing on.

To make sure I was actually doing a proper ice-water facial, I refilled the bowl every five minutes with fresh ice cubes.

My skin wasn't happy at first

My skin turned red correct abroad.

After doing this for ii days, I nigh stopped.

I didn't see whatever desperate changes to my peel, just I noticed my face got scarlet for the 60 minutes or so subsequently each night, which fabricated me wonder if this treatment was more dissentious than beneficial.

I decided to continue on, and past mean solar day four, I started to run across some positive changes in my skin.

After a few days, my pare felt pretty adept

I did notice some improvements with my peel.
Jen Glantz for Insider

After doing this for four days straight, I woke upwardly on solar day 5, looked at my peel in the mirror, and noticed that some of my pimples had get smaller and my pores and wrinkles were looking minimized. My skin also felt smoother.

Many things could've contributed to my skin looking and feeling improve (hormones, diet, etc.), but I was excited virtually how my face looked for the first time in months.

If I endeavor this again in the hereafter, I'll probably add ingredients to the h2o

Y'all tin add together things into the ice water for different benefits.
Jen Glantz for Insider

I wanted to be consistent throughout this i-week experiment, so I only used water ice and common cold water. But Green too said she recommends calculation different oils or ingredients for additional benefits.

"To make your ice-water facial more therapeutic you tin can add essential oils (such as rose oil), aloe vera, whole milk, or cucumber," she told Insider.

She explained that rose-hip oil contains vitamins E, A, and C as well every bit omega and linolenic acids, which can help rebuild collagen. Aloe vera is packed with vitamins A, C, E, and B12, which can strengthen and protect the pare from UV damage. And whole milk'southward lactic acid can deed as an anti-aging amanuensis.

Fighting off congenital-up UV damage from my years of tanning and preventing more than premature crumbling are some of my chief skin-care goals, so in the future, I'd probably add aloe vera.

I don't call back I'll stick with these daily facials

I might try exercise this again every one time in a while.
Jen Glantz for Insider

Although I eventually got used to sticking my confront into a freezing-cold bowl of h2o (it didn't experience equally cold past day three and by mean solar day seven it felt quite squeamish), it didn't bring extreme changes to my skin, so it didn't feel worthwhile to practise every mean solar day.

Green agreed that this treatment works all-time when it'due south done in moderation.

I'k glad that the daily ice-h2o facials are over.
Jen Glantz for Insider

I plan on doing this once again every once in a while — possibly earlier an important occasion or when I notice my peel is feeling actress irritated, simply it certainly isn't going to get a part of my daily routine.

I'm glad that I gave this a try only I'm even happier that I don't accept to dunk my face into ice water again tonight.
